XABANA (45°29'28"N 10°08'42"E) di Matthias Neumann di normaldesign

The site-responsive sculpture "Xabana (45°29'28"N 10°08'42"E)" is part of an ongoing work series of temporary sculptures that follows a distinct formal constructive language, using untreated commercial wood slats and color fields. The installation at the Ex-Polveriera acts as an abstract sculptural marker overlooking the site, enclosing a void that itself is enveloped in layers of space. Over the past decade my work has been focused on the notion of temporary installations in public spaces, and concerns itself with questions as to what does it mean for art to occupy the public realm, where the passerby has an agency and where everyday activities play out?, and how does temporality inform the sculptural work? The work is constructed out of cheap and untreated commercial lumber, and will weather over time, essentially becoming more part of the place as time progresses. And eventually the wood will rot and fade away. I consider the acknowledgment of cycles of death and birth in my work as life affirming. The color fields will age differently and the increasing contrast will make the progression of time visible.
